Dear Editor,
I am concerned about the significant downsides of the “One China Policy” and its implications for global politics.
The One China Policy, which recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China, may have brought stability to the region but also led to various negative consequences that warrant serious consideration.
First and foremost, the One China policy has marginalized Taiwan on the international stage. Despite being a thriving democracy with a vibrant economy, Taiwan is excluded from participating in most international organizations. It is diplomatically isolated due to pressure from the People’s Republic of China. This undermines Taiwan’s sovereignty and deprives the international community of the valuable contributions Taiwan could make in various fields.
Sadly, the One China Policy has perpetuated regional tensions, particularly about the Taiwan Strait. It has encouraged the People’s Republic of China to assert its territorial claims aggressively, leading to increased militarization and potential conflict with far-reaching implications for regional stability and global security.
It has limited how to peacefully work out the situation between China and Taiwan. It’s like the international community has tied up the chances for Beijing and Taipei to talk and make a peaceful agreement about Taiwan’s status.
Why can’t the international community reevaluate policy implications and consider a more nuanced approach that recognizes the situation’s complexities?
Shouldn’t all nations uphold the principles of democracy, self-determination, and peaceful conflict resolution and ensure that the people of Taiwan have a voice in shaping their own future?
There is nothing to lose for the bigwigs and leaders to start talking and look for new ways to keep things stable and peaceful in the area. They need to find ways to respect the rights and dreams of the people in Taiwan. Only then can we hope to sort out the tricky issue of Taiwan’s status in a lasting and peaceful way.
