GUAGUA, Pampanga — The Department of Public Works and Highways has completed two slope protection projects worth P145.2-million in this town.
Implemented by the Pampanga 2nd District Engineering Office, the two projects are constructed along the Guagua-Pasak River in the Municipality of Guagua.
According to District Engineer Gregorio D. Audea Jr., the Guagua-Pasak River has been heavily silted by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991.
The river was used to be called the Dalan Bapor due to ships using the body of water to ferry goods from Manila to Mexico.
"Our office initiated the construction of flood control structures along the Guagua-Pasak River in 2019 and is actively advocating for funding for future projects in the area to safeguard communities along the river," Audea stated.
Before the implementation of flood mitigation projects in the area, the town center — housing several schools, the Guagua Public Market, and various business establishments — endured the adverse effects of the river's swelling.
During the unfortunate incident, the consequences were severe: Numerous properties were damaged, and residents suffered financial losses and emotional distress.
"We are optimistic that our projects will complement other government initiatives to ensure that residents of Guagua will be spared from the adverse effects of flooding in the future," Audea expressed.
The two completed projects, with a combined length of 1,189 lineal meters, will now ensure the safety of residents and protect the properties of the locals.
