Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has once again affirmed his commitment to the agricultural sector as he personally witnessed the handover of the 10 motorboat engines to fisherfolks in Mati City, Davao Oriental on Saturday, 18 November.
The turnover ceremony, which was also attended by Congressman Cheeno Almario, Governor Niño Sotero Uy, Mayor Michelle Rabat, and Vice Mayor Lorenzo Rabat, among others, marked a crucial step towards both economic recovery and the revitalization of the local fishing industry, which has been significantly affected by the adverse effects of the pandemic.
It also highlighted Go's commitment, as vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, to address the challenges faced by the people during these trying times.
"The provision of motor banca engines is a strategic move aimed at empowering local fisherfolks, boosting their productivity, and ultimately contributing to the economic resurgence of the region," said Go.
"Nagpapasalamat tayo sa Manila Metro Premier PH Eagles Club sa donasyon na ito para maiangat ang kabuhayan ng ating maliliit na mangingisda," he added.
Go, known for his advocacy for public service and community development, emphasized the importance of supporting the backbone of our economy, which includes the hardworking fisherfolks who have been facing unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The senator reiterated that investing in the fishing industry is not only an investment in the livelihoods of the fisherfolks but also a significant contribution to the overall economic recovery of the city, saying, "By empowering fisherfolks and investing in essential sectors, such as the fishing industry, we take meaningful strides towards a more resilient and prosperous future for all."
Referring to a recent study conducted by Pulse Asia Research Inc., Go emphasized the immediate concerns expressed by the public regarding inflation and the imperative need to increase workers' wages. Drawing a connection to the local scenario, he underscored the crucial role played by the fishing sector in Mati City, accentuating its significance in terms of employment, livelihoods, and overall economic advancement.
The survey showed that 74 percent of surveyed individuals voiced concerns about the impact of inflation. The second most prominent concern, indicated by 49 percent of participants, revolved around the urgency of increasing workers' wages. Following closely, the creation of more job opportunities held the third spot with 27 percent.
Go has actively supported legislative initiatives focused on strengthening the agricultural sector. One noteworthy achievement is his collaboration as the co-author of Republic Act 11901, which broadened the financing system for agriculture, fisheries, and rural development.
According to Go, this law is designed to offer improved access to credit for rural communities, particularly benefiting farmers, fisherfolk, and agri-based workers. The goal is to elevate their well-being, competitiveness, and productivity.
In addition to this, Go highlighted the importance of RA 11953 or the New Agrarian Emancipation Act. He took great pride in co-sponsoring and co-authoring the measure, marking a significant step towards empowering agrarian reform beneficiaries and fostering their economic independence, thereby steering towards enhanced food security.
Recognizing the susceptibility of the agricultural sector to natural disasters, Go took proactive measures by filing Senate Bill No. (SBN) 2117 and SBN 2118. These bills aim to ensure comprehensive crop insurance coverage for agrarian reform beneficiaries and enhance overall insurance coverage and services for farmers, addressing a critical aspect of their vulnerability if enacted into law.
Aside from the motorboat engines, Go also provided relief to 50 fishermen and select indigents with grocery packs and snacks.
To boost local development, Go also supported the construction of roads in several barangays, the construction of the Davao Oriental Sports Complex and public park, and the rehabilitation of Buso Hot Spring, all in the city.
Earlier that day, Go also inspected the Super Health Center in Mati City. He also witnessed the groundbreaking of a Super Health Center and attended a farmers' forum in Caraga town where he aided around 2,500 agricultural workers.
