The Climate Change Commission or CCC and the Global Green Growth Institute or GGGI have agreed to work together to promote renewable energy use at the Philippine National Railways.
CCC's Albert dela Cruz Sr. GGGI Assistant Director-General, Dr. Kyung-Nam Shin, Green Investment Services Director Naishant Bhardwaj recently met with PNR Chairman Michael Ted Macapagal to discuss potential collaboration for PNR's use of green sources of energy in the railway system.
"Their visit is quite timely," Macapagal said. "The PNR is currently moving out of the old diesel locomotive technology and will soon be running electric trains all over the NSCR project and possibly in the entire country."
The meeting also discussed the potential development of large-scale renewable energy for the PNR, as this would help reduce GCG emissions in the railway system and the entire transportation sector.
Dela Cruz said the project is aligned with the priority agenda of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has emphasized the need to address the impacts of climate change and global warming through protecting and conserving the environment.
During the 3rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Business Advisory Council meeting in Cebu on 28 July, Marcos encouraged businesses to ensure that climate change issues are effectively addressed sustainably and reliably.
Under the Climate Change Act of 2009, the CCC is mandated to integrate the concept of climate change into its various policies, plans, programs, and projects. It is tasked with enabling the country's transition towards a green economy.
GGGI is an international intergovernmental treaty-based organization based in Seoul, South Korea, that works with governments and the private sector to advance green growth policies and initiatives with a particular focus on using renewable energy to achieve climate resilience and sustainable development.
