PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — Puerto Princesa will be the epicenter of the International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships 2024, marking the first time this prestigious event will take place in the Philippines.

Mayor Lucilo Rodriguez Bayron said Friday that the city government is preparing for the hosting of this prestigious competition, which is expected to draw athletes from 72 countries across the globe.

He estimated 3,500 athletes are anticipated to participate, with the possibility of more spectators eager to witness the historic international competition.

"This is a significant challenge for us, but once we get started and achieve success, it means that organizing and hosting larger events will become much easier for us. It also contributes to the growth of tourism because, besides the city's wealth and beauty, we have many more things to be proud of," Bayron said.

During an orientation held this morning, Leonora Escollante, president of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation, elaborated on the significant responsibilities of the committees being formed by the city government.

Key aspects of preparation, such as facilities, the race course, transportation, accommodation, logistics, catering, medical services, security, and water safety, were also highlighted as critical elements that must be meticulously arranged for the event's success.

Bayron also expressed confidence in the success of this undertaking and sees it as an opportunity to further establish Puerto Princesa on the map of Sports Tourism and Water-based Sports.

After a thorough review, the official dates for the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships are expected to be finalized, potentially scheduled from 28 October to 4 November.
