The local government of Marikina City is eyeing to further boost the city's sports development program in a bid to develop more young athletes.

Marikina City was the host of this year's Palarong Pambansa.

Attributing the success of this year's sporting event, Mayor Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro said the playing venues used in the Palaro will serve as training venues for student-athletes.

"The playing venues used in the Palaro will become permanent structures," Teodoro told DAILY TRIBUNE in an interview.

Using it as a template, Teodoro said they would replicate all the events in the recent Palarong Pambansa.

"We will conduct sports program at the grassroots level. It will not just be limited to some events but all events in the Palaro," the mayor added.

The budget of the city-wide grassroots sports program will be sourced from the local school board, Teodoro said.

The city government is also eyeing to team up with the Sangguniang Kabataan for this program.

"We are just waiting the barangay election is over, then we will propose it to the new set of officers," Teodoro said.

Teodoro also said they will extend incentives such as scholarships or educational assistance.

"The objective is to make them finish their studies," he added.
