NBP goes high-tech

A technology-driven security system is set to be implemented at the New Bilibid Prison, Bureau of Corrections officer-in-charge Gregorio Catapang Jr. said yesterday.

Catapang said the lack of personnel will also be compensated with K9 units and high-tech equipment such as facial recognition.

"High-tech equipment, facial recognition, the problem on who will guard the guardians, the technology will guard the guardians," he said.

The system, he added, will be linked to the command center so that he can see on the screen everyone who is on duty. There will also be facial recognition for inmates.

Catapang said once operational, the inmates will also undergo facial recognition while the K9 units and their handlers will be concentrated at gate four.

Gate four is where everything goes through like clothes, food, and everything else. All these will go through the K9 and inspection through technology.

The former AFP chief revealed that they have a list of personnel involved in the entry of contrabands into the Bilibid, but withheld divulging the information.

Only recently, the BuCor presented assorted contraband, including knives, guns, cellphones, drugs, and more than 7,500 cans of beer.

A can of beer is being sold at P1,000.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla earlier said cellular phones are being sold inside Bilibid for P300,000 to P500,000.
