TACLOBAN CITY — The Philippine Army found a cache of ammunition believed to have been hidden by members of the communist New People's Army in Barangay Mahilom, Hindang, Leyte last 10 November.
Colonel Noel A. Vestuir, commander of the 802nd Infantry (Peerless) Brigade based in Ormoc City, said the cache was discovered based on information provided by civilians.
The joint elements of 14th Infantry (Avenger) Battalion and 93rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayaapaan) Battalion that responded to the information found 167 Cartridges of Cal. 7.62mm linked for M60 General Purpose Machine Gun (M60 GPMG).
Vestuir said the recovery of the ammunition cache will not only downgrade the capabilities of the communists but is also an indicator that insurgents are no longer welcome in their former stronghold communities.
"I am grateful and thankful to the local populace of Barangay Mahilom, Hindang, Leyte for reporting this ammunition cache," Vestuir said. "I encourage all our constituents in the provinces of Biliran, Leyte and Southern Leyte to do the same and report the presence of CNTs in your respective communities."
