Lawmakers on Tuesday condemned the fatal shooting of broadcaster Percival Mabasa, popularly known as Percy Lapid.

Mabasa was driving to work at DWBL radio station on Monday night when he was gunned down by two assailants on a motorcycle, according to the police.

Senator Robinhood "Robin" Padilla said killings have "no place for crime in our midst, especially a brutal attack on a Filipino — be it a member of the media, a civilian, or a member of our uniformed personnel."

"This murder of a mediaman is an attack on the right to freedom of expression that is enshrined in our Constitution," Padilla said in a statement.

"Even as I offer my sincere sympathy to the family and loved ones of Percy, I call on our authorities to apprehend the perpetrators and solve this dastardly crime as soon as possible," he added.

Likewise, Sen. Grace Poe also called for justice for the killing of Mabasa.

"Authorities should look into all angles possibly linked to his death, including his strong stance on issues," Poe said.

"No member of the press must feel curtailed and threatened as they do their job. The killings must be addressed as doing so would usher in greater safety and security of all citizens," she added.

Meanwhile, Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros described the killing of Mabasa as an "attack on press freedom."

"This is a brazen attack on press freedom. But this also demonstrates the inherent power of speech and truth-telling," Hontiveros said.

"Sir Percy was a strong dissenting voice that made sure government officials did not become too comfortable with power. The killings like what happened to Percy sends a signal that if you are in the opposition, you will be silenced," she added.

Hontiveros also vowed to continue to be an ally of the media.

"To our friends in the media, I am with you. We will continue to hold the line with you," she said.
