The 74th annual Emmys saw many artists winning for the first time.
Lee Jung-jae of Squid Game became the first Asian to win Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He was up against Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Jason Bateman (Ozark), Adam Scott (Severance), and Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong (both of Succession).
Squid Game earned 14 nominations including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Park Hae-soo and Oh Young-soo); Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Jung Ho
-yeon), Outstanding Drama Series 2022; Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series; Outstanding Cinematography for a Single Camera Series; Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series; and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
It won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Lee You-mi); Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode; Outstanding Stunt Performance; Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program; and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.
Jung-jae's victory makes him the fourth Asian to win an Emmy.
Euphoria's Zendaya, meanwhile, became the first Black woman to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She beat Jodie Comer (Killing Eve); Laura Linney (Ozark); Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets); Sandra Oh (Killing Eve); and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).
Of the 16 nominations Euphoria received, it won five more: Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Colman Domingo; Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series; Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Writing; Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (non-prosthetic); and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series.
Jennifer Coolidge won her first Emmy as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology series or Movie (White Lotus).
Other White Lotus cast members Connie Britton, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney and Dopesick's Kaitlyn Dever and Mare Winningham were nominated in the same category as well.
White Lotus likewise won Outstanding Limited Series; Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie (Murray Bartlett); Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie (Mike White) and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (White).
"About Damn Time" singer Lizzo won her first Emmy in the Outstanding Competition Program for Amazon Prime's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, besting Nailed It, RuPaul's Drag Race, Top Chef, and The Voice.
Amanda Seyfried also won her first Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited series or Anthology Series or Movie (The Dropout). The show was also nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series; Outstanding Writing a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie; Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie; and Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Quinta Brunson — who made Emmys history as the first Black woman to earn three nominations in the comedy categories the same year — won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Other stars who bagged their first Emmys were Michael Keaton for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series (Dopesick) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category (Abbot Elementary).
