Award-winning actor Martin del Rosario has made a remarkable acting mark with his portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters. He was Gab in Dagitab, a role that earned him a Gawad Urian Best Supporting Actor award. He also portrayed Barbs in Born Beautiful and Warren Panti in The Panti Sisters.
In an interview with Boy Abunda on Fast Talk, Del Rosario said: “As long as maganda ‘yung story, ikagaganda ‘to ng career ko (as long as the story is good and it will boost my career), I don’t mind playing gay characters.”
Getting typecast is a non-issue for the actor.
“I see to it na bawat (each) gay role na ginagawa ko, iba-iba naman eh (The things I do — they vary, you know). So hindi ka mata-typecast (you won’t get typecast) as long as hindi pare-parehas ‘yung binibigay mo (what you give is not the same).”
For the upcoming Cinemalaya competition film, David R. Corpuz’s Tayo Lang ang Nakakaalam, Del Rosario said: “In the movie, I portray the role of Neil, a gay man na sobrang (that is so) restrained. And in the movie, Miguel Odron plays Bong and whatever we have, kami lang ang nakakaalam (only we know).”
On having his sexual orientation questioned because of the perception that he portrays gay roles so convincingly that he must be gay in real life, Del Rosario said: “Even if they make gossip about me or conduct an investigation to prove their point, hindi ako naaapektuhan kasi simula nu’ng pumasok ako sa showbiz (it doesn’t affect me because ever since I started), which is 16 years ago, hanggang ngayon may ganyan pa rin. Manhid na ako (That kind of thing still happens. I’ve become numb to it). I don’t care anymore.”
