The Pampanga Provincial Health Office conducted a dry run of the country’s first floating hospital Tuesday, delivering medical services to more than 60 patients in coastal barangays.
Dr. Dax Tidula led the exercise, which provided residents with primary laboratory services, including blood extractions, electrocardiograms (ECG), and dental care, a P28 million, 112-square-meter vessel designed to reach “Kabalens” in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) that are inaccessible by land.
The project was launched by the provincial government under Vice Governor Lilia Pineda as part of the “Alagang Nanay Preventive Healthcare Program.” It is intended to complement existing initiatives like the “Hospital on Wheels,” which serves remote inland areas such as Porac.
Once fully operational, the barge will expand its services to include ultrasounds, X-rays, medical consultations, OB examinations, and minor surgeries.
The facility is equipped to handle 50 to 200 patients daily and will anchor at specific coastal barangays for more than one week at a time to ensure comprehensive medical coverage for local residents.
Provincial health officials stated they are currently preparing for full deployment following the successful dry run. The floating clinic marks a significant milestone in Philippine healthcare, serving as a specialized maritime solution for communities that land-based medical missions struggle to reach.
