The rise of social commerce in the Philippines took center stage as TikTok Shop concluded its first creator reality show and live selling competition, Live to Shine, positioning grassroots creators as emerging contributors to the country’s fast-growing digital economy.

More than a contest, Live to Shine was framed as a capacity-building initiative that provided aspiring Filipino creators with hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world selling experience — tools increasingly seen as vital as online platforms reshape livelihood opportunities.

The program unfolded against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding creative economy. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority show that the sector contributed P1.94 trillion to gross domestic product in 2024 and generated employment for over 7.5 million Filipinos, underscoring the growing economic weight of content creation and digital entrepreneurship.

Training creators for sustainable income

Participants from across the country were tested through online content creation and live selling challenges, with the Top 16 advancing to an intensive training phase. They were divided into teams and guided by established creators Daddy Louie, Dani Barretto, Iwa Moto and Miss Dioza, who provided mentorship designed to simulate the demands of real-time digital selling.

Contestants were trained in product storytelling, audience engagement, and effective use of TikTok Shop’s live commerce features — skills that organizers said are essential for turning content creation into a stable source of income.

“Live to Shine was built to go beyond competition. It is about equipping creators with the right skills, confidence, and support system so they can turn live selling into a sustainable source of income,” marketing lead of TikTok Shop Philippines Franco Aligaen said.

Competition with community impact

The final round featured team-based and individual live selling challenges streamed on TikTok Shop, measuring not just sales performance but also adaptability and audience connection.

Team Miss Dioza emerged as the top-performing group, with each member receiving P500,000 in cash prizes. The team included Grand Champion Adima Isnaji Balaman, Anne Jeline Mendoza, Gene Gulapa Salvador and Krizia Marcelo.

Reflecting on the win, mentor Miss Dioza said the experience went beyond prizes. “Our journey was not easy, but the team proved that with discipline, heart, and self-belief, challenges can be overcome. This was not just about winning; it was about shaping creators who are ready to grow and pursue their dreams,” she said in Filipino.

The initiative drew support from several private partners, including Ovialand, which awarded the grand winner a house and lot valued at P5 million. Telecommunications firms Globe Telecom, The Loop and TM Star Digital Solutions also provided support, reinforcing the role of cross-industry collaboration in nurturing digital livelihoods.

One of the most closely followed stories was that of Balaman, a full-time housewife and single mother, whose victory marked a turning point amid personal challenges, including housing uncertainty.

“Throughout my Live to Shine journey, there were days when I wanted to give up. But my dreams for my children kept pushing me forward. I am deeply grateful to TikTok Shop for giving me the chance not only to show my selling skills, but also the story and heart behind them,” Balaman said in Filipino, thanking her mentors and teammates for their guidance and trust.
