Paralympian and flag bearer Jerrold Mangliwan of wheelchair racing vows to give his all once the 13th ASEAN Para Games starts on 20 January in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
Mangliwan, 46, said carrying the flag for the first time in his career is a morale booster for him as he looks to surpass the two gold medals he won in the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia back in 2023.
The two-time Paralympian, who will compete in the 100-meter, 400-meter, and 800-meter events, banners 216 Filipino para-athletes in this prestigious tournament for differently-abled individuals.
“I was actually surprised because I didn’t really expect it, although I’m very happy and very proud that I was chosen as the flag bearer,” Mangliwan said.
“In my long career, it was the first time I was chosen as flag bearer. There is pressure, but as my daughter told me, to draw some strength in raising the flag to get the performance I want.”
Mangliwan said he is prioritizing his endurance in his competitions and choosing to compete in middle distances under the T52 category.
“I’m not as explosive in the sprinting events as I used to be. I am maintaining my endurance,” Mangliwan said.
As one of the veterans in the national team, Mangliwang expects no less than his best from his teammates as they target to improve on the 10-10-11 gold-silver-bronze medal tally from the 12th ASEAN Para Games.
“As a team captain, I am willing to show what it means to compete. You need to prove that you can still do it,” Mangliwan said.
“It’s a big responsibility to wear the Philippine jersey because you carry the hopes and honor of the country. Sometimes, you draw your strength there to perform and it is an opportunity that is not given.”
