Riding a wave only he could feel and spectators could only watch, Letran Knights point guard Jonathan Manalili took the word “trending” in two different ways.

First, with his team trending upwards from a 0-3 record at the start of the season, and second, with him trending across social media because of his plays.

The Letran Knights barged into the semifinals stage of NCAA Season 101, even after a winless start that made many count them out.

“I have pressure for the team, because how can I carry this team now that we are in the semifinals?” Manalili said to Daily Tribune in Filipino.

He spearheaded the Knights with 15 points, eight assists, and five rebounds in their 77-73 victory over Perpetual Altas in their first semifinals match Tuesday afternoon at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“So I really need to focus. I don't want to think about anything else for now,” the 21-year-old point guard added.

Social media star

From his assists to the points he makes, his highlights—mostly posted on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram—show how the rookie orchestrates the game.

At one point, he was celebrated and dubbed the “Point God,” to which he said, “At first I couldn't accept that, until I really got used to it.”

Manalili said he is thankful for the warmth he receives from the basketball community and vowed to continue working hard.

A star for young ballers

Starting off as a waterboy before becoming a decorated point guard in the oldest collegiate league in the Philippines, many children look up to Manalili.

“As for me, I was a waterboy. I didn't even know I would make it to the big stage,” Manalili remarked.

“Just keep going, don't get bored, and don't forget God,” he advised.
