Neighborhood sari-sari stores are now assured of consistent support amid concerns that the rise of new retail formats could lead to the demise of the traditional storefront as part of a firm’s programs to boost micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
In a statement, Puregold Price Club Inc. stressed that sari-sari stores, which receive affordable, quality goods through the company, are more than just a business. It described them as an indispensable pillar in Filipino communities and an institution in Philippine society.
“We understand that our sari-sari store owners might be worried about the rise of modern retail formats and how customer habits have evolved. But we are confident that with our full support, the neighborhood tindahans are here to stay,” said its president Vincent Co.
Co underscored that the traditional stores are an integral part of Filipino life, serving as an "anchor and a hub for human connection."
“I could not imagine a future where Filipino neighborhoods no longer have sari-sari stores,” he added.
Co cited that convenience stores and sari-sari stores serve unique customer needs and can co-exist. While modern stores offer efficiency, the tindahan offers essential, distinctly Filipino elements: trust, social exchange, and hyper-local knowledge.
This special role of the sari-sari store is the focus of a recently launched Puregold digital campaign. The campaign pays tribute to the local tindahan, highlighting its resilience and role as the community's reliable navigator and information hub, where people often go for directions or neighborhood updates.
Sari-sari stores also remain a crucial lifeline for Filipinos by selling goods in "tingi," or small portions, which makes daily necessities more accessible and affordable for families.
“You can never put a price on the level of trust and relationship that Filipinos are able to build with their neighborhood sari-sari store. This human element is the ultimate competitive advantage that ensures that the tindahan will always remain relevant,” Co said.
The firm is also calling on sari-sari store owners to boost their business by joining the Tindahan ni Aling Puring Program (TNAP). TNAP, which recently reached 1 million members, provides store owners with the tools and support needed to compete and thrive.
This includes access to high-quality goods at competitive prices, a complete assortment of products, special discounts and rewards, and entrepreneurship training.
