As the Philippines braces for super typhoon “Uwan,” following the recent devastation brought by typhoon “Tino,” the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is urging pet owners and the public alike: never leave animals behind.

“Remember, our pets depend entirely on us for their safety, security and survival — especially during emergencies,” PAWS said in a Facebook post.

The non-profit advised pet owners to prepare an evacuation plan and a “pet go-bag” stocked with essentials like food, water, leashes, carriers and other supplies. “Know where the nearest pet-friendly evacuation center is and plan how to transport your pets quickly if needed,” the organization added.

In urgent situations, improvised carriers — laundry baskets, basins or sturdy crates — can help move pets to safety. If evacuation is necessary, PAWS emphasizes: always bring your pets. If it’s impossible, unchain or uncage them to give them a fighting chance to survive.

“Through every calamity, compassion is our strongest shelter,” PAWS said. “Stay vigilant, stay safe, and stand by your animals — their lives matter, too.”

For stray animals with nowhere safe to go, PAWS encourages the public to provide temporary shelter, clean food and water, and medical attention if they are injured or weak. “Always ensure your own safety, and keep anti-rabies and other vaccinations up to date when helping strays,” the group reminded.

“Every act of compassion counts. If each of us helps even one animal, together we can save millions and create a kinder, safer world for all,” PAWS added.
