Theatre Group Asia (TGA) announces that Tony and two-time Grammy nominee Conrad Ricamora will lead its Philippine production of the iconic musical A Chorus Line as Zach, the director and choreographer who drives the story.
In the musical, Zach runs an audition, challenging performers to confront their motivations, insecurities and vulnerabilities, while also revealing his own. Through this process, Zach uncovers the human truths behind ambition, passion and the sacrifices of those “in the shadows.”
Ricamora, making his Philippine debut, shared, “Performing in the Philippines for the first time is incredibly meaningful for me because it’s my father’s homeland. Bringing my work here feels like a homecoming — a chance to connect with a part of my heritage that I’ve always carried in my heart. The Philippine theater community is known for its passion and talent, and I’ve been so inspired by its artists making their mark globally. I can’t wait to share the stage and learn from their artistry.”
On why he loves A Chorus Line, Ricamora added, “I’ve always admired this show for its raw, vulnerable truth about performers. Stepping into Zach’s shoes, especially in its golden year, feels like a full-circle moment. Despite being written nearly 50 years ago, it still speaks directly to artists today — the hunger, heartbreak, and the need to be seen. Returning to musical theater reminds me of the unique sense of community and honesty the stage offers.”
He reflects on his character, saying, “Zach’s role is to see people clearly, to push them to go deeper, and to reveal who they truly are. I relate to that deeply as both an actor and a human being. The show’s central question ‘Who am I, and why do I dance?’ is universal. We’re all trying to be chosen for who we truly are.”
Ricamora recently earned a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role as Abraham Lincoln in Broadway’s Oh, Mary! He also starred in Here Lies Love as Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, returning to the role a decade after originating it Off-Broadway. His other credits include The King and I on Broadway (earning a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2015), Little Shop of Horrors and Soft Power, which earned him his second Grammy nomination.
On screen, Ricamora appeared in Hulu and Disney+ Philippines’ How to Die Alone, the film Fire Island, and six seasons of ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder as Oliver. He also appears in Fox’s The Resident and the upcoming second film of The Devil Wears Prada.
