Coursera joins OpenAI’s first app ecosystem in ChatGPT to transform global online learning
Published on

Global online learning platform Coursera (NYSE: COUR) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI, becoming one of the first-generation apps integrated directly into ChatGPT. The collaboration, unveiled during OpenAI’s DevDay, marks the first time an online learning platform is embedded within ChatGPT, making trusted educational content instantly available to millions of users around the world.

Every week, more than 800 million people use ChatGPT, with learning identified as one of the most common use cases. Through the new Coursera app, users can now access relevant videos and course information directly within their ChatGPT conversations — turning everyday chats into dynamic, interactive learning experiences.

To use the feature, learners can simply ask ChatGPT for the Coursera app by name. The chatbot will also recommend Coursera content when it detects that educational resources may enhance the conversation.

“This partnership reflects Coursera and OpenAI’s shared commitment to expanding access to education and helping people everywhere learn, grow, and thrive,” said Greg Hart, CEO of Coursera. “By putting trusted, verified learning into the hands of hundreds of millions of people, we can help them gain the skills they need to pursue economic opportunity and prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI, emphasized that combining AI with human expertise creates more meaningful learning: “ChatGPT is quickly becoming one of the go-to tools for people who want to learn something new. But the most powerful learning experiences happen when human expertise and AI work together.”

“By bringing the expertise of world-class educators and institutions within Coursera into ChatGPT,” Belsky added, “learners can more easily find trusted content, build job-ready skills, move their careers forward, and unlock new opportunities.”

The app, built using OpenAI’s Apps SDK, represents a significant step toward scalable, high-quality education. It enables users to move from curiosity to credentials faster — with Coursera content directly embedded into their learning flow.

Coursera is among the first online learning platforms — and one of the first partners overall — to join OpenAI’s app ecosystem. The company said it will continue working with OpenAI to explore how generative AI can make education more personal, interactive, and scalable.

The Coursera app is now available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside of the EU on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, starting with English. Video subtitles and dubbing are available in select languages.

Users can explore the Coursera app directly through ChatGPT or visit the Apps in ChatGPT blog for more information.
