SANTA ROSA, Laguna — Australian star Marc Leishman believes the Philippines is more than ready to host an LIV Golf event, praising the country’s facilities, the energy of local fans, and the quality of the course after firing a superb seven-under-par 65 in the International Series Philippines presented by Bingo Plus at Sta. Elena Golf and Country Club on Saturday.
The former World No. 12 and six-time PGA Tour winner, now competing on the LIV Golf circuit, said he’s been impressed not only by Sta. Elena’s championship-level setup, as well as the strong turnout of spectators who followed the action closely on Moving Day.
“Definitely, yes,” Leishman said when asked if the Philippines could host an LIV event. “I think the Philippines could definitely handle it. Obviously, it’s a lot bigger build-out than what an International Series event is — similar, but on a bigger scale. I think they’re ready. The crowds would embrace it, seeing all the best players in the world, and I’m sure the players would love it too. I hope there is an event here in the future.”
On fire at Sta. Elena
Leishman’s remarks came after a blistering third round that featured seven birdies, including back-to-back ones on 17 and 18, to pull himself back into contention.
“I got a nice start, got the first two holes and kept it going,” he said. “I’m happy with seven-under to get myself back in it. I’ll need a low one tomorrow, but I’ve got a chance.”
When asked if another 65 was possible on Sunday, Leishman flashed a grin.
“There’s one out there — whether I have it or not, who knows,” he said. “I think seven or maybe more. Hopefully, I can shoot another seven-under or better and give them a bit of a run.”
Sta. Elena earns high praise
Leishman was quick to praise Sta. Elena’s design and conditions, calling it one of the most enjoyable tracks he’s played on in the region.
“I love the golf course — the layout is fantastic, and the greens are rolling really nice,” he said. “It’s risk-reward. There are a few holes you can take on if you want, but if you miss it, it’s very penalising. I really, really enjoy the golf course.”
A growing stage for Asian and LIV golfers
Leishman also spoke about the International Series and its growing role in connecting Asian Tour players with LIV Golf stars.
“It’s great that the International Series is getting bigger,” he said. “A lot of the LIV guys are coming back to play. And for the Asian Tour players, it’s a great opportunity — bigger purses, stronger fields. It’s good for everyone.”
A homecoming of sorts
Leishman’s week in the Philippines carries personal significance. His wife is Filipina, and the 40-year-old Aussie said he’s cherished the chance to experience her home country while playing in front of her family.
“It’s the first time I’ve been to the Philippines and I’m loving it,” he said. “I love the food — lumpia, pancit, sinigang, adobo — there’s not much I don’t enjoy! Having my family here supporting me makes this week even better.”
With one round left, Leishman is within striking distance of the leaders. Another low round could turn his first appearance in the Philippines into a storybook finish — one that ends with a trophy and a family celebration.
“It was nice to have a low one today to give myself a chance,” he said. “Sundays are always more enjoyable when you’ve got a shot at the trophy. Hopefully, I can make it even more enjoyable tomorrow.”
