Teacher raises alarm over cracks in Discaya-renovated school building

As faculty members in Manila spent Monday sanitizing classrooms to protect students from a surge in influenza-like illnesses, a Grade 1 teacher raised alarm over what she described as visible structural cracks and signs of poor workmanship in their newly renovated school building.

The facility, refurbished by contractors affiliated with the Discaya family, was intended to bolster safety and modernize aging infrastructure. Instead, teachers say the walls have begun to fissure and sections of concrete appear brittle—defects they fear could prove catastrophic in the event of an earthquake.
