Four decades after the youth cult classic Bagets electrified Philippine pop culture, a new generation of barkada is ready to bring its energy to the stage — led by Andres Muhlach, who steps into the role that launched his father Aga Muhlach to stardom.
Fresh from his film debut Minamahal: 100 Bulaklak Para Kay Luna, Andres joins the 2026 stage adaptation of the beloved 1984 movie as Adie, alternating with fellow Viva artist Mico Hendrix Chua.
For Andres, the role isn’t just another acting milestone — it’s a full-circle tribute to his family’s artistic legacy.
“I understand how big Bagets was, and still is, in the Philippines,” Andres says. “To be part of it, let alone play my dad’s role, feels surreal.”
From Aga to Andres
In the original Bagets, Aga’s Adie was every teenage girl’s dream — a charming boy-next-door whose innocence and warmth captured the zeitgeist of the ‘80s. Now, the baton passes to Andres, who admits that taking on such an iconic role initially came with pressure.
“When we found out I got his breakthrough portrayal, he was super happy for me,” Andres shares. “He was also excited to see how I’m going to approach the character.”
For the young actor, the challenge lies not in imitation but in evolution. “I’d want this to be my own path,” he says. “At the end of the day, the hard work is on us, the new Bagets cast. What we put out isn’t because of what the original actors did, but because we want to create something worthy for today’s fans.”
Making the role his own
Despite the nerves that come with his first major theater project, Andres embraced the rigorous preparation process — acting workshops, vocal training and character immersion.
“It’s really about honing your talents,” he explains. “Once you start learning more about yourself and your abilities, it just makes you more motivated — to perform, improve and keep getting better.”
Andres’ drive to explore both film and theater is clear. “Ever since I was little, I dreamed of seeing myself on the silver screen and on stage,” he says. “Now it’s happening. I just feel blessed.”
Already known for his TV appearances in Ang Mutya ng Section E and Da Pers Family, the actor views Bagets The Musical as an opportunity to stretch his craft and connect with a live audience.
The heart of ‘Bagets The Musical’
The new musical version keeps the spirit of friendship, mischief and youthful rebellion that made Bagets a generational touchstone.
“Playing Adie now is a completely new experience,” Andres says. “He’s still the charismatic, charming boy-next-door type, but his story feels more mature because of his love interest.”
The production reimagines high school life with a contemporary flair — complete with catchy musical numbers, nostalgic nods to the ‘80s and heartfelt scenes that capture the thrill of growing up.
“Atasha and I studied abroad, but I enjoyed my time here more because I was with my best friends,” Andres recalls. “Nothing beats being close to the people who made student life bearable. That’s really at the heart of Bagets The Musical.”

The revival’s cast lineup is as dynamic as its source material. Joining Andres are:
• Noel Comia Jr. and Tomas Rodriguez as Gilbert
• Milo Cruz and Migo Valid as Tonton
• Ethan David and KD Estrada as Arnel
• Jeff Moses and Sam Shoaf as Topee

With a mix of emerging stars and seasoned young performers, Bagets The Musical promises to be a nostalgic yet refreshing experience for audiences of all ages.
Legacy re-imagined
From big screen to grand stage, the Bagets phenomenon continues to inspire stories about youth, friendship and self-discovery. For Andres, it’s more than a role — it’s a torchbearer moment.
“Playing Adie connects me to my dad’s legacy,” he says. “But more than that, it’s about celebrating the journey of being young, chasing dreams and having your friends beside you the whole way.”
Bagets The Musical runs from 23 January to March 2026 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, produced by Viva Live in partnership with Full House Theater Company.
