Porsche’s Leipzig plant just hit a major milestone, its one millionth Macan rolled off the line, a little over a decade since the model first went into production in 2013.
The milestone unit was a Macan 4 finished in Frozen Blue Metallic. It came with a two-tone Black and Chalk leather interior, a panoramic roof, an augmented reality head-up display, and a heated GT Sports steering wheel. Power comes from a battery tucked neatly beneath the cabin. It’s a 100 kWh battery good for up to 612 kilometers of range and 408 horsepower. It can hit 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and tops out at 220 km/h.
The lucky owner is a 62-year-old entrepreneur named Stefan Schmidt from Kiel, Germany. He picked up the car at the Porsche Experience Center Leipzig, where he also got to take a few laps on the factory’s test track in an identical Macan. “Collecting the car from the factory here in Leipzig, as well as experiencing the track… are definitely highlights,” he said.
The Macan has played a big role in Porsche’s story in Leipzig. When Porsche chose the site for Macan production back in 2011, it transformed what was then just an assembly plant into a full-fledged factory, complete with body and paint shops. That expansion created 1,500 new jobs and marked the start of the plant’s move into the EV era.
Fast forward to today, and the factory produces vehicles with combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains, all on the same line. Porsche launched the second-gen Macan, now fully electric, in 2024. More expansion is already underway, with new facilities for bodywork and axle production.
Since opening in 2002, the Leipzig site has grown into one of Porsche’s key manufacturing hubs. Along with the Macan, it also builds the Panamera and previously produced models like the Cayenne and the rare Carrera GT. Around 5,000 people now work at the plant.
