The two First Ladies of the Marcos clan, Imelda Romualdez Marcos and Louise Araneta-Marcos, were captivated by the music of legendary Filipino pianist Raul Sunico and saxophonist Archie Lacorte during the recently concluded Goldenberg The Concert Series at the Goldenberg Mansion, San Miguel, Manila.
The latest Goldenberg Concert was the second for Sunico, a scholar of First Lady Imelda, under the Young Artists Foundation of the Philippines.
Through the scholarship, Sunico earned his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York and subsequently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Piano Performance from New York University.
In 2025, Sunico was conferred the degree of Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) by the Far Eastern University.
During the serenade last 4 July, First Lady Liza even strutted to the beat of “Never Let Her Slip Away,” played by accomplished saxophonist and music educator Archie Lacorte.
“Never Let Her Slip Away,” one of the personal favorite songs of FL Liza, was written by Andrew Gold for his girlfriend, Laraine Newman, a cast member of Saturday Night Live, where Goldman expressed his longing for her during a long-distance call only a week after meeting her.
The Goldenberg Concert also featured some of the best and legendary Filipino folk songs, namely, “Pamulinawen,” “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” “Dahil Sayo” (a favorite of Imelda Marcos), “Saranggola ni Pepe” and “Pandangguhan,” apart from international hits such as “Summertime,” “Night and Day,” “Overture to My Fair Lady,” Take Five,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Spain” and “Rhapsody in Blue.”
