The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing the use of advanced traffic detection through artificial intelligence, as part of its plan to modernize traffic management via an adaptive signaling system now used in several countries.
The initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to adopt the latest technologies and innovations for improved public service.
MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said the agency aims to shift from traditional ground loop detectors to video detectors for traffic monitoring.
"As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency," said Artes during a press briefing held at the MMDA Head Office in Pasig City.
He added, “Hopefully, by next year, this innovation will be put into place.”
According to the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC), traffic signal systems with video detectors are less susceptible to damage caused by roadworks, harsh weather, and physical interference. Powered by AI technology, these systems can capture additional vehicle information such as speed, direction, and license plate numbers.
Artes also presented several videos to the media showing the issues caused by countdown timers — such as drivers making sudden decisions to speed through intersections and incidents of red-light violations.
Last week, the MMDA announced the removal of traffic light countdown timers in 96 intersections along major Metro Manila thoroughfares. The agency replaced fixed-timer traffic lights with adaptive signaling systems that use sensors. The decommissioning of the old timers was carried out by the MMDA TEC.
