LUUK, Sulu — The Philippine Army’s 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade has pledged its continued support for local peace-building initiatives in Sulu, particularly in resolving clan feuds, known as “rido,” which are common in the Muslim-dominated province.
Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade, disclosed that recent rido settlements highlight the ongoing partnership among soldiers, local government units, law enforcement, and civil society in advancing peace, security and community healing in Sulu.
Delos Santos specifically cited the resolution of a nearly 20-year conflict between the Jumala and Idno families, which had resulted in the death of Julhasan Jumala. The local government of Luuk successfully facilitated the amicable settlement of this long-standing dispute.
The historic reconciliation took place at the Ana Bay Hotel Function Hall in Barangay Tandu Bato, Luuk, Sulu. Luuk Mayor Al-Makram Arbison spearheaded the activity in coordination with the Luuk Municipal Peace and Order Council.
Col. Alex H. Gagula, deputy brigade commander, attended the event, along with Lt. Col. Dante Mantes, commanding officer of the 101st Infantry Battalion; Police Captain Marcelo Agarin, officer-in-charge of Luuk Municipal Police Station; and Councilor Abdurajik Abbas, Sangguniang Bayan chairperson on Peace and Order.
“By ending this rido, they are setting a powerful example for other communities grappling with similar conflicts,” Gagula said.
“The Philippine Army, through the 1102nd Brigade, will continue to support local peacebuilding efforts across Sulu,” he added.
Gagula also commended both families for their courage and commitment in choosing reconciliation.
