The Florida Panthers have retained the Stanley Cup after clinching the National Hockey League championship for the second straight year, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the finals on 17 June.
But the celebration came at a cost. During a post-game party at a bar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the iconic silver trophy sustained a crack and a dented base, according to reports.
Team officials said the damage will be repaired in time for the Panthers’ victory parade on Sunday.
Meanwhile, in Italy, a contemporary art mishap nearly turned a crystal masterpiece into rubble.
Italian artist Nicola Bolla’s sculpture Van Gogh’s Chair, crafted from crystal, was damaged while on exhibit at the Palazzo Maffei in Verona last April. According to museum security footage, two visitors posed for photos with the artwork, pretending to sit on it.
One man, taking his turn in front of the camera, lost his balance and fell backward onto the chair, snapping its front legs.
“It was an idiotic thing to do,” Bolla told Fanpage, according to a translation by Agence France-Presse, as reported by Smithsonianmag.com.
The individuals left the museum without reporting the incident. The sculpture has since been repaired and is back on display.
