Whether Cristian Araneta’s vaunted punching power will propel him to victory will be known Thursday when the Filipino battles Thanongsak Simsri of Thailand for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) light-flyweight title in Tokyo.
Their readiness was in full display during Wednesday’s official weigh-in when the two easily made the 108-pound limit.
The southpaw Araneta tipped in at 48.8 kgs (107.58 pounds) while Simsri stepped in at 48.6 kgs (107.14 pounds).
Araneta, nicknamed “The Bomb,” and his team arrived in Tokyo almost two weeks ago and this allowed the Cebu-born banger to even engage in a sparring session with two-belt world flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji.
Providing pointers for Araneta is Julius Erving Junco while making sure he is properly hydrated come fight night is noted dietitian Jeaneth Aro.
Holding a 25-2 win-loss record with 20 knockouts, Araneta’s last two fights ended via first-round knockouts.

Japanese Katsuhiko Nakamura was appointed by the IBF as the referee while Leszek Jankowaik of Poland and Masakazu Murase and Koji Tanaka, both from Japan, are the three judges.
Tsuyoshi Yasukochi, the secretary general of the Japan Boxing Commission, is the fight supervisor.
If triumphant, Araneta will become the country’s third world champion after Melvin Jerusalem and Pedro Taduran.
