The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) on Monday said in partnership with the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), they had turned over two solar-Powered Irrigation Projects (SPIPs) worth a total of P18.5 million to Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) in Barangay Marcela, Sta. Marcela and Barangay Dagupan, Luna, Apayao.
These projects, DAR said, aim to promote sustainable farming by giving farmers a steady and eco-friendly water supply. They also help lower farming costs and improve crop production.
The Marcela SPIP, worth P7.5 million under the 2023 Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program–Irrigation Component (CARP-IC) Fund, will serve 22 farmers across 15 hectares. The Dagupan SPIP, worth P11 million under the 2024 CARP-IC fund, will benefit 34 farmers and cover 24 hectares.
Both projects include solar-powered pumps, canals and other irrigation structures designed to provide consistent and environmentally friendly irrigation.
With these systems, farmers can now save on fuel and electricity, grow more crops throughout the year, and earn more income. They can also plant a wider variety of crops, helping improve local food supply.
Chief Agrarian Reform Program Officer Juliet Dumapis shared that the use of solar-powered irrigation helps farmers work more efficiently and supports long-term agricultural development.
The turnover ceremony was attended by Vice Governor Remy Albano, Flora Mayor Rodolfo Juan, NIA-CAR Regional Manager Benito Espique Jr. and other officials. Their presence reflects strong support for renewable energy solutions that benefit farming communities.
DAR, NIA and local officials, along with members of the irrigators’ associations, joined the event — highlighting the government’s commitment to building sustainable farming systems across the Cordillera region.
