The Santacruzan sa Sugbo is an annual celebration that features a splendid array of reinas and zagalas. These women, elegantly dressed symbolize a variety of virtues, biblical figures and historical personalities who hold great significance within Filipino tradition.
Each reina represents a distinct theme or narrative closely tied to the Flores de Mayo festival and the Santacruzan procession.
This traditional event commemorates the revered discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine. The procession is not only a religious observance, but also a cultural homage that highlights the deep-rooted faith and rich heritage of the Filipino people.
Through their costumes, poise and the stories they embody, the reinas and zagalas bring to life the spiritual and historical essence of this cherished Filipino Catholic celebration, making the Santacruzan a meaningful and visual stunning tribute to faith, history and community values.
Some of the key reinasinclude Reina de las Virgenes. She carries a rosary or lily, symbolizing chastity and is escorted by angels.
Reina de la Familia symbolizes her role as the Queen of Families. She represents Mary’s protection, guidance and blessing over the family unit, embodying ideals of unity, love and faith within the household.
Reina Mora represents Muslim Filipinos and honors the coexistence of different faiths in the Philippines and highlights the country’s religious diversity.
Reina Banderada symbolizes the arrival and growth of Christianity in the Philippines. Typically, she is depicted as a maiden dressed in red, carrying a yellow flag which represents the Christian faith’s establishment in the country.
As both a religious observance and a festive community event, the Santacruzan sa Sugbo continues to inspire and unite generations, keeping alive a treasured story of faith and celebration in the heart of the Cebuanos.
This year’s much anticipated and well-attended Santacruzan sa Sugbo was hosted by theCebuWaterfront Hotel and Casino, the Clothes for Life organization and the Cebu City Tourism Commission.
