The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a suspect in a murder case in Bay, Laguna, following an intensive investigation that included DNA testing to confirm the victim’s identity.

NBI director Jaime Santiago disclosed on Monday that charges have been filed against the suspect, and a warrant of arrest had been issued by the Southern Police District (SPD).

Santiago credited the success of the operation to the creation of the Inter-agency task force against kidnapping by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.

He said the investigation remains ongoing, with one suspect recently apprehended by NBI operatives.

Santiago stressed that the case should not end with the filing of charges, as additional documents from the International Criminal Police (Interpol) Center are being reviewed.

The NBI also uncovered financial transactions linked to the suspects, revealing that while online transfers were below P50,000, large cash dealings — some reaching P100,000 — were conducted in person.

An accomplice was reportedly arrested last year and hospitalized, while two others remain at large. The NBI is reviewing CCTV footage as part of the evidence.

Also on Monday, Santiago said the NBI is investigating two Chinese nationals and a Filipino for alleged immigration violations following their arrest by the Bacoor Municipal Police Station for illegal possession of firearms.

Santiago said that while the initial charge was bailable, further investigation revealed possible breaches of immigration laws.

“They are now going through inquest proceedings for illegal entry into the country,” Santiago said.

Authorities have withheld details about the suspects and victims to ensure their safety and privacy. “The victims are cooperating, and we are prioritizing their security,” Santiago added.

The two Chinese nationals and their Filipino accomplice were released after posting P100,000 bail.

Meanwhile, two additional individuals surrendered and confessed to involvement in the murder case. One was identified as an employee of a victim, while the other allegedly worked as a security escort for business meetings.

The NBI assured the public that the investigation remains active and that all individuals involved are being closely monitored.
