The U.S.-based Medical Wellness Association (MWA), a leading organization of health professionals, has classified a sardine brand from the Philippines as a "Superfood," the first seafood worldwide to receive this designation.

The MWA's decision followed a review of the nutrient profile of sardines and the brand -- Mega Sardines -- unique processing methods. The move also builds on a 2023 Harvard University article highlighting the health benefits of consuming smaller fish like sardines, which are rich in protein, Omega-3 fats, and various vitamins and minerals while posing a lower risk of mercury contamination compared to larger fish.

Dr. Christopher Breuleux, president and founder of the MWA, stated that Mega Sardines can play a vital role in combating metabolic and cardiovascular disease.

"It is truly a gift from nature for human health, and the processing is done with ultimate care and with an eye towards preserving freshness all the way to the dinner table. It is, indeed, a ‘Superfood’ everyone should increase their intake of," he said.

Mega Sardines distinguishes itself through its vertical integration, owning its entire fishing fleet and implementing rigorous standards to ensure freshness. The company touts a "Catch to can in under 12 hours" processing time, which the MWA noted as a significant factor in preserving the sardines' nutrients.

William Tiu Lim, the founder of Mega Sardines, said his initial goal 50 years ago was to provide cost-effective, nutritious meals for lower-income households in the Philippines.

"Today, Mega Sardines is no longer a fishing company, but a global wellness company. We want to help improve the wellness of the world’s consumers. This is a legacy and a mission worth fighting for," Tiu Lim said.
