A glimpse into our political future

FROM political advertisements plastered along the perimeter walls in Tondo, Manila, to the Commission on Elections preparations for the actual voting, nobody thought 12 May 2025 polls would be a historic one in terms of voters’ turnout and the surprising results generated by the millennials and the GenZs. These not only restored public trust in the electoral system but also empowered young voters to actively participate in shaping the nation’s future.

The 2025 Philippine midterm elections marked a historic milestone in democratic participation, achieving an unprecedented voter turnout of 81.65 percent, the highest ever recorded for a midterm poll in the country.

This remarkable engagement is largely attributed to the active involvement of the youth, who comprised over 60 percent of the 68.4 million registered voters.

The surge in youth participation was driven by a collective desire for systemic change and a more inclusive political landscape.

Candidates like Bam Aquino and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, who emphasized youth empowerment and food sustainability, resonated deeply with younger voters. Despite being initially ranked outside the winning circle in pre-election surveys, Pangilinan secured a top-five finish, a testament to the decisive impact of the youth vote.

The Commission on Elections played a pivotal role in facilitating this engagement by implementing extensive voter education campaigns, expanding registration access, and establishing task forces against vote buying and disinformation.

These efforts not only restored public trust in the electoral system but also empowered young voters to actively participate in shaping their nation’s future.
