CAPAS, Tarlac — When shot put thrower William Morrison competed in the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championships, he wasn’t just representing the national team.

The 28-year-old Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist told DAILY TRIBUNE he has been working as an assistant coach at the Missouri Valley College in the United States for two years, focusing on throwing events such as shot put, discus, and hammer throw.

Morrison won the men’s shot put last Friday here at the New Clark City Stadium after tallying 18.81 meters.

“I coach in all the throws. I love coaching my athletes but sometimes it can be hard trying to coach yourself and coach them as well, but it was fun,” Morrison said.

“I like being able to give them knowledge and I’d train with them sometimes so they can see how it’s done.”

Morrison has a bevy of experience to impart to his throwers as he won two gold medals in the SEA Games in 2019 and 2022.

The Indiana University alumnus also made it to the final of the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok.

With Morrison also being primed to compete in the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea from 27 to 31 May, he is thankful that the school allowed him to train for the national team.

“Growing up, I didn’t know anyone who threw, so I like to show people how it is, just letting them learn about it,” Morrison said.

“I work 40 hours a week but luckily, my job’s cool and lets me train and travel.”
