President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., on Tuesday, declared a National Period of Mourning for the passing of Pope Francis.
According to Proclamation No. 871, the mourning period is effective immediately until the Holy Father’s funeral.
During this period, Philippine flags in government buildings and installations across the country and overseas shall be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset out of respect for the Supreme Pontiff.
In the proclamation document, Marcos emphasized the importance of Pope Francis as a figure and as a leader, particularly during his visit to the Philippines in 2015—a time of despair for the Filipino people.
“Pope Francis holds a special place in the hearts of the Filipino people, particularly during his Apostolic Visit to the Philippines in January 2015, where he offered comfort and solidarity to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda, and celebrated the resilience of the Filipino faithful despite adversities,” he said.
“The passing of Pope Francis is a moment of profound sorrow for the Catholic Church and for the Filipino people, who recognize him as a global leader of compassion and a tireless advocate for peace, justice, and human dignity; and this nation expresses solidarity with the world as our generation mourns the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, with loving prayers for his eternal peace,” he added.
Earlier, Malacañang Palace confirmed that President Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will join global leaders in attending the funeral of His Holiness, Pope Francis.
The interment of the Holy Father is scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
The 88-year-old Pontiff passed away on Easter Monday due to stroke and heart failure.
