Each Holy Week, Christians remember the final journey of Jesus Christ through the Way of the Cross, a solemn devotion that invites the faithful to walk in prayer and reflection through the events of His Passion.
The Way of the Cross, also known as the Stations of the Cross or Via Dolorosa, traces 14 key moments from Jesus' condemnation to His burial. It is a powerful reminder of His suffering and sacrifice, often prayed in churches, chapels, or community processions, especially on Good Friday.
More than a ritual, the Way of the Cross helps believers enter into the heart of the Lenten season. It offers a chance to pause, reflect, and meditate on the depth of Christ’s love and the lessons each station holds.
Here are the 14 Stations of the Cross:
I. Jesus is condemned to death
II. Jesus carries His cross
III. Jesus falls the first time
IV. Jesus meets His mother
V. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross
VI. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
VII. Jesus falls the second time
VIII. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
IX. Jesus falls the third time
X. Jesus is stripped of His garments
XI. Jesus is nailed to the cross
XII. Jesus dies on the cross
XIII. Jesus’ body is taken down from the cross
XIV. Jesus is laid in the tomb
In many communities across the Philippines, the Way of the Cross is marked by quiet devotion. Some pray before the stations inside churches, while others participate in outdoor processions that bring the scenes to life along village paths or city streets.
Every station speaks not only of Christ’s suffering, but also of the challenges people face in their own lives. It teaches lessons on compassion, endurance, humility, and hope.
As Holy Week continues, may each step of the Way of the Cross guide the faithful to a deeper understanding of sacrifice and love, and lead to the joy of Easter with renewed faith.
