The country is preparing to pay tribute to National Artist for Film Nora Aunor, whose passing on 16 April 2025, marks the end of an era in Philippine cinema and culture. She was 71.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) confirmed the loss of the legendary actress and singer in a heartfelt statement, expressing deep sorrow over the passing of one of the Philippines’ most celebrated cultural icons.
In a Facebook post shared by National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), it stated that they arranged a necrological service for the country's National Artist.
“State necrological services and funeral arrangements will be announced shortly,” the NCCA said, as it honored Aunor’s unparalleled contribution to film, music, and television.
Known affectionately as the “Superstar,” Aunor rose to fame with her powerful singing voice and went on to shatter stereotypes in the film industry with her unique beauty and compelling performances. She defied the traditional mold of a leading lady and emerged as a symbol of authenticity and talent.
Her legacy includes a string of unforgettable roles that defined generations of Filipino cinema — among them, the tragic Elsa in Himala (1982), the wrongly imprisoned inmate in Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), and the titular character in The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995), which earned international acclaim.
