LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — As the Holy Week exodus begins, the Department of Public Works and Highways – Ilocos Norte Second District Engineering Office (DPWH-IN2DEO) has launched its annual “Lakbay Alalay” program to assist motorists traveling through the province’s national roads.
In a message sent to the DAILY TRIBUNE, District Engineer James Ferrer confirmed the establishment of three fully operational Motorist Assistance Stations positioned in strategic locations across Ilocos Norte. These stations are located along the boundary of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte in the Badoc section of the Manila North Road, directly in front of the DPWH-IN2DEO compound also along the Manila North Road, and in the Dingras section of the Ilocos Norte-Apayao Road. According to Ferrer, these locations were chosen for their heavy vehicular traffic during the Lenten season and their proximity to both local communities and tourists’ routes.
A total of 200 personnel have been mobilized for the program, working in coordinated shifts of eight hours each to ensure 24/7 coverage. These teams are composed of engineers, support staff, and emergency responders, all stationed to provide immediate assistance to travelers in need. Each station is equipped with basic tools for addressing minor vehicle troubles such as flat tires and overheating engines. Service vehicles are also on standby for emergencies, and communication equipment has been deployed to ensure quick response and coordination with local authorities when needed.
The motorist stations are not only offering mechanical aid but also serving as information hubs. Ferrer highlighted the importance of guiding tourists—both local and foreign—through accurate road directions and travel advisories, especially since Ilocos Norte remains one of the top destinations during the Holy Week. With many unfamiliar with the area’s road network, these assistance centers aim to reduce confusion and help prevent unnecessary delays.
The “Lakbay Alalay” program officially began operations at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, 16 April, and will continue until 5:00 PM on Saturday, 19 April. Ferrer stressed that all personnel involved in the program were strictly instructed to observe professionalism and extend courteous service to all motorists regardless of the concern.
This initiative is part of the DPWH’s broader commitment to public safety and proactive service during peak travel periods. It also complements efforts from other government agencies in maintaining order and readiness along critical transportation routes. With 24-hour visibility and round-the-clock availability, the “Lakbay Alalay” stations aim to make travel safer, easier, and more efficient for the thousands expected to journey through Ilocos Norte this Holy Week.
