Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation (ACAC) has teamed up with global aviation consultancy Ricondo & Associates to develop a master plan aimed at transforming Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) into a world-class aviation hub for the Philippines.

With Cebu’s increasing importance as a gateway for tourism and commerce, the initiative seeks to expand airport capacity, optimize operations and integrate advanced technology to enhance passenger experience and boost regional connectivity.

The MCIA master plan will implement a phased development strategy to anticipate and accommodate future air traffic growth, allowing for proactive capacity expansion that aligns with increasing passenger demand.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the plan also stresses innovation, technology and sustainability as the MCIA aims to use digital solutions, automation and environmentally friendly initiatives to improve operational efficiency, streamline passenger movement and reduce its carbon footprint.

Enhancements to support facilities, security systems, and airport operations are also included to strengthen MCIA’s competitive position in global aviation.

According to Athanasios Titonis, CEO of ACAC, the collaboration with Ricondo will elevate MCIA’s standards and plan for the future of its facilities and infrastructure.

“Our focus remains on being the main Tourism and Transfer gateway in the country by delivering an exceptional passenger experience, embracing sustainable practices, and ensuring operational excellence,” Titonis said.

He added that the initiative follows MCIA’s recent Airport Service Quality Award for Best Airport in the 5 to 15 Million Passengers Per Annum category in Asia-Pacific.

MCIA is committed to adopting green airport initiatives, including energy-efficient infrastructure, eco-friendly design elements, and waste reduction programs, aligning with global sustainability efforts in air travel.

Hendrik Orsinger, director at Ricondo & Associates, said they are pleased to support ACAC in charting the future for MCIA.

“ACAC has a compelling vision for the airport, focused on delivering excellent service, facilitating growth in the local economy and serving as a transfer hub for the wider region. We look forward to helping shape the masterplan to realize the vision and position the airport and region for long-term sustainable growth,” Orsinger said.
