SM Prime Holdings is accelerating the country’s transition toward clean energy with major strides in solar-powered development, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and innovation across its properties.
As of early 2025, the company has outfitted 47 SM Supermalls nationwide with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. These installations deliver a combined peak capacity of 63 megawatts, fueled by over 118,000 solar panels deployed across mall rooftops — a milestone that underscores SM Prime’s leadership in renewable energy adoption within the Philippine commercial sector.
The company’s Net Zero 2040 roadmap anchors these initiatives, focusing on cutting greenhouse gas emissions and aligning operations with global climate goals. SM Supermalls President Steven Tan said the company’s efforts are part of a long-term vision to reduce carbon footprint and introduce energy-efficient innovations that benefit both operations and the broader community.
“Through these initiatives, we are able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and create long-term operational savings for our malls, while simultaneously introducing innovative solutions towards a greener and brighter future for everyone,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan.
A standout example is SM Mall of Asia (MOA), which features the multi-use rooftop development MOA Sky. Its solar-covered walkway integrates 555 PV panels, adding 0.3 megawatts to the mall’s 3-megawatt solar PV system. This is enough to power roughly 1,800 households for a month. The mall’s energy strategy recently earned it the Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution from the Department of Energy, recognizing SM MOA’s role in showcasing the commercial and environmental value of large-scale solar adoption.
SM City Bicutan is also embracing solar-powered design, introducing parasol structures at its Sky Garden. These functional installations use solar energy to power lights for up to five hours at night after charging during the day — an example of how SM integrates environmental consciousness into customer spaces.
During the 2025 Energy Efficiency Day conference, Engr. Teodoro Bautista, Vice President of SM Engineering, Design, and Development Corporation, presented the group’s continued progress in operational energy efficiency. The event highlighted SM’s role in advancing renewable energy deployment across large-scale developments.
SM Prime’s transition to renewable energy is a key component of its climate action strategy under the Net Zero 2040 roadmap. Through systematic decarbonization across its portfolio, the company continues to play a leading role in supporting national and global climate targets while delivering measurable sustainability outcomes that leave a lasting positive impact on the environment.
