President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has deemed misogynistic and disrespectful comments made against women and minorities during campaign rallies “unacceptable,” Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said Thursday.
“According to the President, it is unacceptable for candidates to use this narrative in their campaigning,” Castro said, adding that such statements should not be applauded, nor should candidates who make them be celebrated or idolized.
“If this was done before and was applauded, it should not happen during the administration of President Marcos,” Castro said.
She also stressed that those seeking public office should promote respect.
“They must continue to promote respect, integrity, and truthfulness in their statements as they deliver on their promises to their constituents and voters,” she said.
Castro disclosed that Marcos lauded the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) swift actions against candidates who have made insensitive remarks during campaign rallies.
To recall, several candidates have recently faced criticism for making lewd remarks against women and minorities.
Pasig City congressional candidate Christian “Ian” Sia is facing show-cause orders from the Supreme Court and the Comelec after stating he was willing to sleep with single mothers once a year if elected.
