Commuters preparing for the expected surge in travelers during the Lenten season can expect additional buses and heightened safety measures, as the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) works to ensure a smooth and secure Holy Week exodus.
The LTFRB said on Wednesday that it has issued 1,018 special permits for provincial buses to accommodate the increased demand. The permits are valid from 11 to 27 April, covering Holy Week and the following days.
The agency also noted that it has begun random inspections of public utility vehicles (PUVs) and transport terminals to verify the validity of operators' documents, including permits, fare matrices, vehicle markings, and safety accessories. Inspections will continue throughout the travel period.
LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III urged passengers to plan ahead. “We advise passengers to plan early, check travel schedules, and ensure tickets and necessary documents are in order,” Guadiz said.
He also cautioned against using unregistered vehicles, which present safety risks.
“Avoid riding in 'colorum' or illegal vehicles as these do not undergo proper inspection and lack insurance coverage for passengers.”
Likewise, Guadiz reminded passengers to maintain basic health precautions, advising travelers to carry hygiene kits, alcohol, and face masks, especially in crowded areas.
Starting 11 April, the LTFRB will also monitor private terminals to ensure help desks and sufficient personnel are available to assist passengers.
