Students in 300 off-grid schools across the Philippines are set to gain access to reliable electricity and digital learning tools through AuroraPH, a new initiative launched by the Department of Education (DepEd) and Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (AFI).
Under a recently signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), AFI will equip remote schools with solar power systems, Starlink internet connectivity, digital learning tools, and teacher training to address long-standing challenges in access to electricity and online educational resources.
“We want to ensure that the needs of students are prioritized. We are laying the groundwork for inclusive education and digital empowerment,” said Aboitiz Equity Ventures CEO Sabin M. Aboitiz during the ceremonial signing on Thursday.
“This is not a short-term donation, it is a sustainable and scalable solution, one that supports DepEd’s strategic goals, aligns with global development priorities, and reflects the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to advance education, innovation, and inclusive growth.”
AuroraPH is currently in its implementation phase, with 12 pilot schools targeted for completion in 2025. AFI will assess energy requirements, deploy Starlink satellite internet, and provide digital devices such as tablets and laptops pre-loaded with educational software. Training sessions will also be conducted to equip teachers and school staff with the necessary skills to maintain the systems and integrate digital learning strategies into their classrooms.
DepEd will collaborate with AFI by facilitating school selection, engaging local communities, and ensuring the effective use of digital tools in the curriculum.
Several AFI partners, including Huawei Philippines, DFNN, A+Power Services Inc., Davao Light and Power Company and Aboitiz InfraCapital, were also invited to participate in the initiative.
