National University (NU) captain Bella Belen downplayed the so-called “swagfest” between them and De La Salle University, emphasizing that the intensity displayed on the court is just part of the game and never personal.

Belen, who led the Lady Bulldogs to a 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18 victory over the Lady Spikers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, said that her fiery emotions during matches are a natural extension of her competitive spirit.

“When I show my true self while playing, I see that it energizes my team. Even during training, this is how I am,” said Belen, who finished with 23 points, including 17 attacks, four blocks, and two aces.

“In training, I challenge my teammates. Even our coaches and assistants who join our sessions – we challenge each other. It’s just normal for us because that’s how we express our love for the game.”

The rivalry between NU and La Salle has intensified in recent seasons, with both teams bringing high energy and on-court bravado.

However, Belen clarified that her celebratory gestures are never meant as a form of one-upmanship against their opponents.

“If I were to focus on matching or surpassing someone else’s ‘swag,’ I would lose track of my real purpose — which is to win,” she emphasized.

“For me, if the other team celebrates after a point, I just think, ‘Ah, okay, that’s cute.’ It doesn’t bother me because it’s part of the game. That’s how they celebrate, and we have our own way, too.”

“It’s not like we go into every game thinking we have to be flashy. We just play our style and enjoy the game.”

With Belen leading the charge, NU once again proved to be a dominant force in the UAAP, sweeping La Salle in the elimination round for the second time in three seasons.

But for the NU skipper, the focus remains clear and that is winning through sheer skill and passion for the sport.

The Lady Bulldogs set their sights on their next match against University of the Philippines on 26 March at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
