Have you ever walked into a room and suddenly felt like you could take on the world, or worse, like you’d stepped into a black hole of negative vibes? Feng shui is silently tugging at strings behind the scenes.

Feng shui is more than just moving your couch for fun; it is the ancient Chinese practice of establishing places to attract good fortune, harmony and possibly even ward off that mid-week slump.

For Melvin Sua, what started as simple curiosity evolved into a lifelong journey of learning and practice in geomancy. It is a discipline rooted in Chinese metaphysics that continues to influence how we live and design today. And, with specialists like him, harmonize the energy in your home it is more than just ancient wisdom — it’s a modern game changer.

Sua’s story began in 2017, when he met a Filipino geomancer who was, as he describes, “a feng shui nerd” with over two decades of experience.

“He could read and write Chinese characters fluently and understood the deeper concepts beyond just rearranging furniture,” Sua shares.

A house reading with this mentor created a flood of questions for Sua, questions that went beyond basic adjustments. “I was more interested in learning how to read and interpret the charts myself.”

This thirst for knowledge drove him to take classes, which led to exclusive conversations with his mentor. By 2018, Sua was flying to Singapore and Malaysia on a regular basis to study with various feng shui experts, gaining a better knowledge of geomancy’s complex mechanisms.

Sua now devotes the majority of his time to practicing and studying feng shui, as well as gaining various Japanese sake certifications, including the title of Master Sake Sommelier.

Yet, feng shui remains at the heart of his work, blending tradition with modern application.

“It’s a passion,” Melvin shares. “After I first learned it, I told my friends, and suddenly everyone was asking me to check their charts, to check this, check that. But then I realized it’s not just fun — it’s a responsibility. When people come to you for a destiny reading, they’re usually at a crossroads. It’s heavy to be the one giving direction — telling someone to change their path, immigrate, or start over somewhere new.”

Beyond feng shui as ‘decorating’

“Filipinos often think feng shui is just about moving furniture,” Sua says. “But it’s deeper than that.” He explains that feng shui, literally meaning “wind-water,” traditionally refers to arranging physical spaces — homes, offices, even burial tombs — to harness positive energy or Qi.”

However, his practice extends beyond the confines of space.

“There are four areas we look at: physical spaces, destiny through birth charts (Bazi), auspicious timings for major life events, and divination for situational insights,” he explains.

Sua does not limit himself to a single system when conducting personal readings. He frequently blends Bazi (Chinese astrology), Vedic astrology, and Qimen Dunjia, a Chinese metaphysical system utilized for pattern recognition, decision-making, and even financial analysis.

“You’d be surprised how many charts show a person’s tendency to spend more than save,” he laughs.

The energy you can’t ignore

Sua describes Qi — the life force or energy flow — as something we all intuitively feel.

“Ever walk into a room filled with old stuff and notice how stagnant or heavy the air feels? That’s poor Qi flow,” he says.

His simplest advice? Declutter. “You need to let go of old energy, whether it’s physical clutter or emotional baggage, to make room for new energy.”

Even birth charts reflect a tendency to hold onto things, whether they are souvenirs from trips or emotional attachments. “When you declutter, it’s not just the space that gets lighter, it’s you.”

Unlike some feng shui schools that push for yearly changes based on the Chinese zodiac, Sua believes in a more permanent method.

“When a house is built, it has a permanent energy imprint, like a birth chart,” he explains. “That’s why a proper feng shui audit focuses on aligning with that fixed energy.”

Still, he advises basic practical steps, “Keep your bed, desk, and stove away from beams,” he says. “It’s one of the simplest ways to improve the Qi in space.”

While many seek feng shui consultations when they’re at a crossroads, Sua emphasizes that it’s not about superstition. “It’s not a religion; it’s more like an ecology of energy,” he says. And while skeptics exist, he isn’t on a mission to convert anyone. “I help people who are open and ready to explore this. Everyone’s on a different pace.”

One recent client followed his advice on timing for an IVF procedure — and later shared that the treatment was successful. “Usually, when there’s no news, it means everything’s flowing well,” Sua notes.

Your destiny, your call

At the end of the day, Sua reminds customers that destiny is made up of the following primary elements: your birth chart, your surroundings, and your free will. “You could have the most favorable chart and perfect feng shui, but if you don’t act, nothing changes.”

Melvin Sua ended with a bang and is eager to point out that he is not a fortune teller controlling the strings of fate.

He simply sees himself as a guide. “I’ll just show you the easiest road,” he says. “You create your destiny. You create your karma. This is your story, not my story. You choose your own adventure.”
