With electricity supply remaining a challenge in Cebu, a ray of light shone in the Queen City of the South following the groundbreaking of the P7.5 billion Daanbantayan Solar Plant with Acciona Energia Global, a global leader in renewable energy, leading the project.
In a statement on Thursday, the Board of Investments (BoI) said the solar project is expected to reduce electricity costs in Cebu significantly, supplying electricity to an estimated 300,000 people.
The BoI added the development is a crucial step towards achieving energy sustainability, particularly in a region that has historically lagged in renewable energy adoption compared to highly urbanized areas like Metro Manila.
“This project highlights the tangible impact of the Green Lane program, showcasing its success in attracting investors, particularly in renewable energy. It serves as a meaningful milestone, paving the way for more projects that advance our mission to promote green investments and create job opportunities for Filipinos,” Trade and Industry Secretary and BoI board chairperson Cristina Roque said.
Once operational, expected by late 2026, the solar plant will not only provide substantial clean energy contributions but will also drive economic growth in the region, reinforcing Cebu’s role in the country’s energy sector development.
“Today with the spirit of global connection, we reaffirm our vision for a more sustainable future with the inauguration of this new solar plant. This plant, with a peak capacity of 176 megawatts, 150 base [capacity], and a battery storage system, will begin operations in 2026, with an expected production that is equivalent to the consumption of more than 300,000 people,” Sr. José Manuel Entrecanales Domecq, chairman and CEO of Acciona, said.
