A province in Mindanao is positioning itself as a prominent farm tourism destination following the successful hosting of the 8th Philippine International Farm Tourism Conference.
The event, organized by the International School of Sustainable Tourism (ISST) and supported by the City Government of General Santos, took place from February 24 to 26 at the KCC Mall of General Santos City, famously known as the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines.”
The three-day conference, themed “Stimulating Sustainable Economic Growth in Rural Communities through Farm Tourism,” gathered practitioners and authorities from the farm tourism industry.
Department of Tourism Secretary Esperanza Christina Garcia-Frasco, who delivered the keynote speech, said, “At the heart of farm tourism lies a simple yet powerful idea: that our farms are more than just places of production. They are living landscapes of culture, history, and sustainability, where traditions are passed down, innovation takes root, and communities find new pathways to prosperity.”
This year’s conference focused on sustainable growth through the development of fruit farms, aquaculture, livestock, and investments in agriculture and tourism. Topics included diversified agriculture, sustainable farm tourism models, and the role of farm tourism in food security, among others.
Experts from the U.S., Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and local farm tourism operators from Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon shared insights on various successful ventures. Attendees visited leading farm sites in Gen. Santos City, including Felicidad Orchard and Garden Organics, Bougainvilla Avenue, Sarangani Highlands, and several others.
The farm sites, which offer agricultural activities and experiences, have added to the city’s appeal as a tourist destination.
The conference was supported by several government agencies, including the Tourism Promotions Board, the Department of Agriculture, and the Philippine Exporters Confederation, among others. Official carrier Philippine Airlines also supported the event.
