Day of reckoning

As the country approaches the 11 May 2025 elections, a palpable sense of anticipation and tension fills the air. It is not just another day but a crucial “day of reckoning” for local officials nationwide and a judgment day for the electorate. The decisions made on this day will shape the future of our communities.

As voters get ready to make their voices heard, there is a rising demand for accountability and change. Many communities are actively discussing the candidates’ agendas and the key issues at stake, which include economic recovery, public safety, and improvements to infrastructure.

The stakes are significant, and this election will influence the political landscape for years to come, highlighting the necessity of informed decision-making in the democratic process. Each vote cast should result from carefully considering and understanding the candidates’ platforms and past actions.

This election allows candidates to share their vision and promises while allowing voters to hold leaders accountable for their past actions.

The campaign period for local officials, from 28 March until 10 May, has been a whirlwind of activities, with candidates vying for the attention and trust of constituents.

Starting 28 March, local candidates have had a limited window to engage with voters, making each day count in their efforts to build credibility and rapport.

This campaign has faced several challenges. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has implemented strict regulations prohibiting any election-related activities on important dates, including Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the eve and day of the elections. These regulations remind candidates to honor the solemnity of these occasions and promote integrity in the electoral process.

11 May is about more than just campaigning; it represents the electorate’s opportunity to choose local leaders who can address pressing issues such as poverty, infrastructure, education,and healthcare within their communities. This day serves as a reminder that, just like families, local officials directly impact the lives of ordinary Filipinos.

Voters can evaluate whether their current leaders have fulfilled their commitments. Were promises honored? Have issues of corruption and inefficiency been addressed? Are the communities in a better position than they were before? As voters head to polling stations, they should consider these critical questions carefully.

This year’s election is crucial; it tests the Philippines’ democracy. Voters will once again exercise their right to shape the future of their towns, cities, provinces, and the country as a whole.

In a climate of political polarization and disinformation, voters can prioritize transparency and good governance over mediocrity and corruption. Engaged and informed citizens can significantly impact local administrations, even if only for a single day.

Each vote cast is a statement — a declaration of hope for change, a new beginning, or continuity. As we approach this day of reckoning, citizens must remember that their participation is crucial.

Engaging in discussions, fact-checking claims, and raising awareness about local issues are all ways to contribute to a more informed electorate.

The 11th of May is not just another date on the calendar; it is a pivotal moment for voters to choose local officials who will either reaffirm their mandates or face the consequences of their actions in office.

For local candidates, it’s a chance to solidify a legacy or be held accountable, and for voters, it’s an opportunity to shape the future of their communities. This is my first time running for an elective post, and I have chosen to serve in Cebu City, where my family lives.

As the campaign draws to a close, the stakes have never been higher, and the call for integrity in leadership has never been more resonant.
