President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Friday called on local government units (LGUs) to integrate health and nutrition programs into their annual investment plans as part of efforts to combat intergenerational malnutrition.

Speaking at the 2024 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony in Quezon City, Marcos emphasized the importance of addressing malnutrition among vulnerable sectors, particularly pregnant women, mothers, and young children.

“I urge all local chief executives: commit to providing your counterpart investments in nutrition, especially for nutritionally at-risk pregnant mothers, for the First 1,000 Days of Life of children and beyond," Marcos said.

He stressed that a nation’s strength is rooted in the well-being of its people.

“Investing in human capital is the key to securing our nation’s future. Therefore, let us intensify our commitment to breaking the cycle of intergenerational malnutrition by looking after the welfare of our people — especially pregnant women, mothers, and their children," he added.

LGU achievements

Marcos also commended LGUs and advocates who have made significant strides in improving nutrition in their communities. A total of 23 LGUs and five Local Nutrition Focal Points were recognized for their outstanding contributions.

“Let the best practices that you have introduced in your respective communities inspire others to create a ripple effect towards the countryside, towards a healthier future,” he said.

He further urged local leaders to strengthen their initiatives to combat malnutrition and encouraged the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to include healthcare and nutrition as priority indicators in the Seal of Good Local Governance.

“This move will reinforce a whole-of-nation approach to advancing the health and well-being of future generations,” he added.

The Marcos administration has been implementing various programs to address food security and malnutrition. In 2023, Executive Order No. 44 launched the Walang Gutom 2027: Food Stamp Program, providing P3,000 in monthly food credits to low-income families. These credits can be used to buy food from Kadiwa stalls and authorized stores.

Additionally, the Expanded Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) grants a P350 monthly allowance to over 68,000 4Ps households with pregnant mothers or children aged 0-2, aiming to prevent early childhood malnutrition.

These initiatives align with the Philippine Development Plan’s (PDP) goal of achieving zero hunger by 2028.
