As the application period for the SM Foundation College Scholarship opens, many incoming freshmen are gearing up to apply. If you're one of those students, it can feel like a daunting task — but don’t worry! With the right preparation and a little guidance, you can make your application stand out.

We caught up with Junie Ann Mariano, an alumna of the SM Foundation Scholarship Program and a licensed professional teacher, to get her expert advice on how to successfully navigate the scholarship application process.

Start early to avoid last-minute stress

One of the biggest mistakes applicants make is waiting until the last minute to submit their applications. According to Junie Ann, "Starting early is key. Procrastination can lead to mistakes, stress, and missing crucial documents." Her advice? Start reviewing the scholarship requirements and create a checklist to ensure you don’t overlook any details. Planning ahead will save you time and keep things organized.

Organize your documents for a smooth process

When it comes to submitting your application, organizing your documents is crucial. Incomplete or incorrect paperwork can delay your chances or even disqualify you. “Double-check all required documents — school records, recommendation letters, and proof of eligibility — make sure they’re up-to-date,” Junie Ann says. By keeping everything neat and organized in one folder, you’ll avoid the headache of scrambling for papers at the last minute.

Ace your interview with confidence

If you’re shortlisted for an interview, don’t panic! Junie Ann shares that it’s an opportunity to shine. “Think of the interview as your chance to show them who you really are,” she says. To make a great impression, practice speaking confidently about your aspirations, achievements, and why you want to be a part of the SM Foundation community. “Stay calm, be yourself, and let your passion for education and personal growth come through,” she adds.

Write a personal statement that stands out

Your personal statement is your chance to go beyond grades and demonstrate what drives you. Junie Ann advises applicants to “write from the heart” and focus on their long-term goals and how the scholarship will help them achieve those ambitions. “SM Foundation looks for individuals who have the potential to make a positive impact on society,” she explains. After writing your personal statement, take the time to proofread it for clarity and to ensure there are no mistakes.

Stay positive and keep pushing forward

The scholarship application process can feel intimidating, but Junie Ann reminds us that staying positive and persistent is the key to success. “This is your chance to prove that you have what it takes to be an SM scholar. Don’t be discouraged — take your time and give it your best shot,” she says. Remember, applying for scholarships has never been easier, thanks to technology, but it still requires a thoughtful and focused effort.

Don't be afraid to show the real you in your applications and interviews.
